Empowering Rural Women Through Digital Literacy: A Success Story

In a world increasingly driven by technology, digital literacy is no longer a luxury — it is a necessity. Yet, for millions of rural women in Nigeria, access to digital tools and training remains a distant dream.

AWAYAI's Rural Women Digital Literacy Project set out to change this narrative. Launched in January 2025, the program targeted three states: Kano, Kaduna, and Plateau — regions where internet penetration and digital access are among the lowest in the country.

The Challenge

In these communities, women face multiple barriers: poverty, cultural norms that limit their mobility, lack of access to education, and the digital gender gap. Only 17% of women in rural Northern Nigeria own a mobile phone capable of accessing the internet.

Our Approach

We partnered with local community leaders to establish 30 digital training centers, each equipped with solar-powered tablets and internet connectivity. The curriculum covered:

  • Basic computer literacy
  • Mobile banking and financial management
  • Social media for business
  • Online safety and digital rights
  • E-commerce fundamentals
  • The Results

The numbers speak for themselves. Over 3,200 women completed the program, with 85% now actively using digital tools to run businesses. More importantly, participants reported a 60% increase in household income within six months of completing the training.

    A Story of Transformation

One of our participants, Hauwa Ibrahim, had never touched a computer before joining the program. Today, she manages an Instagram store with over 10,000 followers, selling handmade crafts to customers across Nigeria and beyond.

"I used to think technology was for educated people in cities," Hauwa says. "Now I teach other women in my community how to use their phones for business. AWAYAI didn't just teach me digital skills — they gave me a voice."

    The Road Ahead

Building on this success, we are expanding the program to five additional states in 2026. Our goal is to train 25,000 women over the next three years, creating a network of digitally empowered women driving economic change in their communities.
