Why Girl-Child Education Cannot Wait

Every day that a girl is out of school is a day lost to poverty, inequality, and missed potential. In Nigeria, over 10 million children are out of school — and the majority are girls.

The Barriers

Girls in Nigeria face a complex web of barriers to education:

  • Poverty: Families often prioritize boys' education when resources are limited
  • Early marriage: 43% of girls are married before 18 in Northern Nigeria
  • Cultural norms: In some communities, educating girls is not valued
  • Safety: The journey to school can be dangerous
  • Lack of infrastructure: Many schools lack appropriate sanitation facilities for girls
  • Our Response

AWAYAI's Girl-Child Education Scholarship program tackles these barriers from multiple angles:

  • Full scholarships covering tuition, uniforms, books, and supplies
  • Mentorship programs pairing girls with successful women
  • Community sensitization campaigns addressing cultural barriers
  • School infrastructure improvements including safe sanitation facilities
  • Advocacy with local and state governments for policy change
  • Results That Inspire

Since 2023, we have sponsored 1,500 girls across Northern Nigeria. Our retention rate is 95% — well above the national average. Perhaps most inspiringly, 30% of our scholars now volunteer as peer mentors, creating a virtuous cycle of empowerment.

    The Bottom Line

Educating girls is the single most effective investment in development. Educated girls earn higher incomes, raise healthier families, and contribute more to their communities. The time to act is now.
